GERMAN PRISONERS

ESCAPE IN CANADA

ELEVEN RECAPTURED

(Received April 21, 8 a.m.)

TORONTO, April 19.

Twenty-eight German prisoners escaped through a tunnel at night from a north-western Ontario internment camp. The surrounding country is heavily wooded and studded with tiny lakes. The district is sparselypopulated and practically foodless. Altogether 61 prisoners have escaped from the internment authorities in Canada.

Eleven of the Germans have been recaptured, one of them being wound6d. It is believed that the others have stolen a fishing smack in an effort to reach the United States side of Lake Superior. The United States coastguard patrol has been warned,, to keep a lookout.

Aeroplanes, bloodhounds, soldiers, and police are participating in the search. Colonel H. S. Stethem, director of internment camps, is personally leading the hunt.
