NEWS OF THE DAY

Home Guard Deer Shoqting. \ An expedition by a party of members of one Home Guard unit had a double purpose. It was. arranged for the weekend, and the members taking part were to < assist in the campaign in culling deer and chamois in the Mount Cook region, for which object they had the permission of the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry). In addition to gaining shooting practice, the party hoped to have tests in field exercises. Signallers accompanying the party were to keep the various groups in contact with headquarters at the s Ball Hut Weighing Machine Collects £900. During recent weeks the old musical weighing machine in the Wanganui Museum has been' creating much interest among visitors from other centres. Many people who visited the museum during Easter said they had done so principally to see the old machine and have their fortunes told by it to the tune of "Tlie v Merry Widow" waltz, "The Sidewalks of New York," or one of the other old-time tunes it plays. More than £900 in pennies has been collected by the machine since it was acquired by the museum many years ago. Question of Evidence. The Christehurch Man-power Committee has not been satisfied with some of the appeals made by the Director of National Service on behalf of civil servants, states the "Star-Sun." There were several cases called on Friday where there was'no appearance of the appellant nor any official who could give evidence as to the nature of the work being carried out by the reservists. At a previous sitting of the.committee, the chairman (Mr. J. S. Barnett) ins(ructed the secretary to write the Director asking that, in appeals such as this, a responsible officer of the Department concerned should attend the sitting to give evidence. The secretary said yesterday morning that he had had no reply so far. Mr. Barnett said the position was unsatisfactory and that the committee should have more evidence before it than the official file. The secretary said that full inquiries were made by the Director before he placed a recommendation before the committee.
