ARIETTA TRIUMPHS
MANAWATU TROTS
TWO SENSATIONAL PRICES
(By "Ariki Toa.")
The Manawatu Trotting Club's Annual Meeting, which opened at Awapuni on Saturday, was favoured with pleasant weather, but the track, as the result of overnight rain, was dead. Backers, generally, experienced « an excellent run, no fewer than six. win favourites scoring, with the remaining two victors, Native Bird and Stylish Lady, returning sensational dividends of over three score. The totalisator handled £11,685, as against £7437 last year, when single pool operated, an increase of £4248. The Manawatu Trotting Cup saw Arietta backed down to p. short price, and really her supporters never had a moment's anxiety. With a round to go Loch Leven was making the pace from Bonnie Direct, Franco, Grattanita, and Arietta; and it was not until approaching the straight that O. E. Hooper allowed the last-named her head, and she immediately l-aced up to join Loch Leven. The latter was, gone half-way down, and Arietta was only kept going over the last bit to score by a length and a half. Loch Leven was made a lot of use of out in front, but he.hung to his task gamely to beat Franco by a long neck for second money. Warship came from a good way back to pass a lot of beaten horses for the barren honour. Grattanita "stopped quickly in the straight, and Gay Lady broke up at the start and lost fully a furlong. BIG SURPRISE. A win dividend of over two-thirds of a century was hoisted when Native Bird finished too well for the favourite, Lee Berry, in the Awapuni Handicap. At the completion of a circuit the race was practically confined to Twice Worthy. Lee Berry, Native Bird, and Frontier Boy, and they turned into the straight in this order, with Native ' Bird, although making two slight breaks, staying on best. Lee Berry had every chance, not putting a foot wrong, 'but Twice Worthy did not assist his chances by breaking about a hundred yards from home. Frontier Boy ran a useful race, but Sea Meal left her feet badly at the half-mile. Vera Worthy showed speed, but the remainder were never dangerous. Agent made a one-horse race of the Ladies' Bracelet, going to the front at the end of a couple of furlongs and never being extended to run out an easy winner by five lengths from Centaurus, who, with Fly Across, had trailed the leader from the start. The back-markers Bingen Fashion and First Call ran fair races to be next, but Zinora was never pacing evenly and was never dangerous. Shannon Lass made all the running in the Pohangina Handicap, and she did not require driving out to win by three lengths from Don Walla, who had trailed her throughout. True Guide and De Reske had a good battle for the minor money, with the latter staying just a shade the better. These four horses practically had the race to themselves, and the well-backed Kaulala and Neutrality could make no impression. Pearloro made a couple of slight breaks. OUTSIDER SCORES. Backers suffered a reverse when Stylish Lady came home at odds of just over three score in the Longburn Handicap. She took up the pacemaking from barrier release, and although Agent was within striking distance at the home turn it was only on sufferance, and there was still a length and a quarter separating them at the post. Agent was probably a shade unlucky in that she suffered serious interference when Fly Across fell soon after the start, and with about a mile to go she was still 60 yards from the leadei'S. Centaurus was a fair third, 'and First Call next, but neither ever looked a Winner. Dulux suffered an early check and was sent to a break. Lee Berry atoned for his early defeat when he annexed the McDonald Handicap in easy fashion, after racing to the front at the end.of a couple of furlongs. He was joined at the home turn by Frontier Boy and Native Bird, (but neither of them ever looked like I troubling the leader. Native Bell broke badly at the start but showed fine speed to be up fourth at the straight. Sea Meal and Red Knight left their feet on a couple of occasions, and Redmond's Pride finished fairly well for fourth, after being a long way back early. Kosha was backed down to a short price in the Stewards' Handicap, and after being in fourth place at the halfmile behind Don Walla, True Guide, and Nawton Junior, he moved up sharply approaching the home turn to join Don Walla in the van and then go on to a decisive victory. Nawton Junior, very patiently driven, outstayed Don Walla for second money, with True Guide fourth. Kaulala made a couple of slight skips, but Lady Nessa and Pearloro could make little impression. Night Beam proved the sixth win favourite to score when she came through in the straight to draw out to an easy victory in the President's Handicap. Te Roto and Roj'al Navy were responsible' for the early pace with Handicapper handy, and Te Roto and Handicapper ran on for the minor places. Hardy Oak was slow away, but he revealed enough speed to suggest that he will touch a short price at his next appearance.
