SERVICEMEN ON LEAVE

CENTRES ALL KEPT BUSY

Beautifully-arranged bowls of bronze I chrysanthemums, and fires in the lib- j rary and main lounge, made the National Club a cheerful rendezvous for soldiers and other Servicemen at the weekend. Carpets were rolled back for the National Union's tea dance on Saturday and this, as well as the threecourse, dinner, was as well attended as usual. Saturday was notable for the number of uniformed girls who visited the club before and after the parade. Miss Josephine Russell was in charge o£ National Union members on duty, her working committee comprising Misses N. Grant, L. E. Clifford, P. Inglis, L. C. Smith, H. Wynn-Hetae, V. Wiren,, M. Hamilton, P. Whelan, and S. Bennetts. Mrs. D. Hall and other members of the Wellington South electorate were in charge yesterday, and served tea to a number of men. The conveners were helped by Mesdames H. W. Brown, A. S. Morley, L. M. McMillan, M. Strathmore, and C. H. Dunford. * OPEN ON ANZAC DAY. Dancing will not be held at the A.N.A. Club next Friday, which is Anzac Day, but njen of the services will be welcome, as usual, to make use of the cafeteria, lounge, and games room. There is no slackening in attendances at the club and all last week and at the weekend the rooms were crowded with men in uniform. The cafeteria was particularly busy and the executive was grateful for gifts of hampers from the Masterton Welfare League, Carterton Women's Institute, and Dannevirke Patriotic Sotiety. The dances were again popular. Miss Patricia Gledhill being in charge on Friday and Misses Valeric Neely and Joan Harriss on Saturday. Junior members of the Manakau Patriotic Society were the club's guests for the Friday dance. Those who have helped the executive recently include Mrs. Peter Fraser's party, Air Force Relations, Navy League, A.N.A. Girls' Auxiliary, and other members. TRIBUTE TO THE LATE SIR CHARGES LUKE. At the Soldiers' Tea at the V.M.C.A. yesterday the chairman, Mr. R. H. Nimnio, paid tribute to the life of the late Sir Charles Luke, one of the foundation members of the Wellington V.M.C.A., who had taken a special interest in the work for soldiers.. As a mark of respect,, those present stood to attention for a few moments. The hostesses at the tea were members of the Pioneer Club and a short concert programme was presented. Vocal solos were given by Mrs. Merle Gamble and Mr. Don Gamble, and Mr. and Mrs. Gamble sang a duet. Corporal N. Armstrong gave an elocutionery item and humorous sketches were given by Anne Lane and Mrs. Reid. The accompanists were Miss Finlay and Mr. J. Mann; and Mr. J. White was the leader of a community sing. AT WEBBY'S CLUB. Another full weekend's entertainment was enjoyed at Webby's Club, when it was again visited by large crowds of soldiers, airmen, and members of the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy. .Among'them were several members of the Fijian Force, who have been frequent visitors, and they were .wished good luck at their future camps and accorded musical honours by the members. The-club premises now present a comfortable and bright appearance, -many gifts of furniture having been added to the rooms, for which members wish to thartk the anonymous donors. Their thanks are also extended to those women who contributed to suppers and teas during the weekend, when dancing, novelties, and games were arranged by the members and the many girls who assist them. Next weekend the informal dance will be held on Thursday night instead of Friday, and quiet hospitality.will be available at the club from 2.30 p.m. on Anzac Day. Otherwise the usual hours will be observed at the weekend, and dance music will be provided by David Roache and his band. Y.W.C.A. DOES ITS SHARE. The Y.W.C.A. «entertainment of men of the forces followed along the usual lines during the weekend. A successful dance was held on Saturday from 6 p.m. till 11 p.m. On Sunday the service was conducted by the Rev. J. T» Holland, C.F., and after tea an interesting series of films was shown by Mr. Casey, of the Government Tourist Bureau. Hostesses and helpers during, the weekend were Mesdames R. Gardner, W. Page, E. Carter, de Shryver, R, S. Mclness. J T. Holland, J. Robson, R. A: Martin, Misses F. Kershaw, A. D. Rennie, L. W. Bridgman, Smith, Stark, J. Curry, A. Knox, N.
