LORD AUCKLAND
VICTIM OF AIR RAID

AUCKLAND. This Day,
Lprd Auckland, reported by cable yesterday to have been killed in the latest air raid on London, was invited to New Zealand for the Centennial celebrations, but was unable to come. In a letter to the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, he stated that he would come to Auckland when the war was over Lord Auckland was a naval architect and was connected with many engineering works on the Continent
He was the sixth holder of the barony. The second baron, after whom the city of Auckland was named by Captain Hobson in 1840. was made an earl for his services as Viceroy of India, but _as he died unmarried the earldom became extinct. A fine ppr : trait of the earl, which was presented to the city by the late Lord Auckland, hangs in the Auckland City Council Chambers.
