LOANS AND GIFTS
The total of contributions to the War Expenses Fund is now £ 2,664,691. Last night ' the Minister -. of ••■ Finance (Mr. Nash),, expressing ,'appreciation .of. the continuance :of contributions, said • that hardly 'a day . passed1 without', there being some splendid example of selfdenial by , : men and women anxious to strengthen .the ; war• effort;in, a positive way.'. '" •■' .••. :_'_;. -• '_ ■ "A case in point that has come to my notice duringUhe past, week," the Minister .added,' "is the: action of a man who has. been carrying out important work- for the Government in connection^ ■ with • the:? war effort, for which, he has received' a certain .modest remuneration.. After providing for tax commitments "in respect' of the payment received, he has Very' generously returned the,entire balance .to the "G6vernment. as: ; .ari interest-free/war loan for their duration. of the war and six months .thereafter.
