HAUGHTY'S RECORD

SEVEN WINS THIS SEASON

(By Ariki Toa.") One of the most promising intermediate pacers in the Dominion today is the Nelson Derby mare Haughty, who added to an already good record this season by annexing a double in easy fashion at Hawera last weekend. In all her races this mare has revealed speed and stamina above the average, and providing she can be induced to begin a shade smarter than in the past she should be equal to holding her own in any company. It is not surprising that Haughty is a brilliant pacer, for her sire Nelson Derby was a fine racehorse who included among his many successes the Auckland Trotting Cup, while Regal Voyage built up a great record in the best classes about ten years ago. Special Force Fails. One of the disappointments at Addington last Saturday was the failure of Special Force in the Metropolitan All-Aged Stakes. He began better than usual, and was actually in front at the completion of a couple of furlongs, but when the pressure was applied at the home turn he did not finish on and was fourth to pass the judge. In the past the Quite Sure colt has always done his best work at the end of his races, and it was surprising to note his lapse in this sphere on Saturday. It may prove wise to overlook this failure when he next appears, for there is no doubt that he is a brilliant pacer for his age. Set Difficult Tasks. Certissimus is probably the most brilliant trotter ever raced in the Dominion, but there is no doubting that hn has been < set tasks far beyond his capabilities. His performance at Timaru last month showed plainly that he is as yet not equal to footing it with the pacers, and it was not surprising to note his failure at Addington last Saturday. It seems a pity that he was not allowed to make his way gradually to the best classes, instead of being set to meet champions of all ages.
