"RED HOT"
CONDITION OF ROAD
STORM DEBRIS MOT CLEARED
Comparison between the road servicing given by the City and Suburban Highways Board and the Hutt County Council was drawn by members of the executive of Ihe Automobile Association (Wellington) last evening, when the condition of the road between Point Howard and Lowry Bay was under discussion. Since the board was abolished the Hutt County Council has received a subsidy towards the maintenance of the highway—known as the Eastern Bay Road—and yet, it was stated last evening, debris from the last storm had not been cleared. The storm occurred three weeks ago.
The roads committee recommended that representations be made to the Hutt County Council, which, it understood, was now liable for the maintenance of the road, in regard to the debris which had been left from the storm. It was some weeks since the debris had been deposited, said the report, and no steps had been taken to have it removed.
Mr. E. H. de J Clere said it seemed "red hot" to think that on the morning of the storm, if buses had not gone over the road to crush the rubble, small cars could not have gone through The debris had only jus) been worn off the main pari of the road by traffic past Point Howard. He thought it a scandalous position, which was terribly dangerous for small cars. The chairman. Mr. E. A. Batt. said that if the Hutt County Council was getting a subsidy to do the work the Automobile Association should insist on the work being done. Otherwise, roads *would deteriorate very rapidly as a result of the City and Suburban Highways Board going out of existence.
Mr. H. W. Shortt said that in the past debris had been cleared almost immediately. Now it had to be ground in by heavy Ira Tic. The secretary (Mr. W. A. Sutherland) said the principle of the Main Highways Board was to have a man on the job immediately after a storm. Mr. E. Palliser said that a considerable amount of debris was still on the road.
The report of the committee was adopted.
