HOME GUARD
Kilbirnie and Lyall Bay.—This company held a route march last Tuesday and on Sunday company drill in preparation for the parade on April 19. There is still room for improvement in the numbers attending parades. The next parade will be at 7 o'clock tonight.
Hataitai.—Company drill was held on Thursday night in preparation for the parade on April 19. On Saturday the unit marched to Pirie Street Park, where company drill was held. The roll number is still short, of that required for two companies. Ngaio.—Field operations proved of great value to both Ngaio and Johnsonville. During the past fortnight Mr. McJennet. of the Wellington Fire Brigade; delivered his final lecture on fire-fighting. and instructions on bombing, bayonet fighting, field manoeuvres, and rifle aiming were completed last Wednesday night. On Saturday afternoon the men received instruction in parade-ground drill, and this was followed by a short route march. Plimmerton. —At a largely-attended social gathering the unit commander (Lieutenant Hancock) announced the appointment of new officers and n.c.o.s. In his speech Lieutenant Hancock pointed out that Plimmerton was one of the most vital areas in New Zealand. 'But," said Lieutenant Hancock, "I believe we have the men to do the job. We are having the advantage of instruction in field-craft and demolitions by instructors from the Army School of Instruction, the highest authority in New Zealand. We also have in our own ranks expert instructors in signalling and physical training. Many more men are wanted and we will be pleased to see new members on parade." Items by Messrs. H. Tahiwi and Ross were supported by others on an entertaining programme. Brooklyn.—Guardsmen were the guests of the Brooklyn R.S.A. Club last Thursday evening at a korero arranged for the Brooklyn Home Guard Company. An enjoyable social evening was spent. On Saturday the n.c.o.s platoon carried out field work in the hills above Ohiro Valley. One party endeavoured to move up to the position occupied by another party without being observed, and for both sides the value of various kinds of cover was demonstrated by the exercise. On Monday evening there was a parade by the full company After a route march one platoon carried on rifle drill and the others were given physical training and recreational games. Non-commissioned officers will parade next Thursday, and the next evening parade for the company will be on April 21.
