DICTATORSHIP AIM
THE COUP IN IRAK
BRITISH VIEWPOINT
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, April 5,
A message from Bagdad states that the newly-formed Government announced that one of the principal features of its policy will be fulfilment of all Irak's international obligations, especially the Anglo-Iraki Treaty.
It is announced in London that Sir Kinahan Cornwallis. the new British Ambassador to Bagdad, has been instructed that the British Government considers the present situation there as completely unconstitutional, and must await the formation of a properly constituted Government. Later reports from Irak fully confirmed the first impression of the irregular character of the developments there since the resignation of General Taha el Hashimi.
The situation has been obscure, but it appears clear that while Parliament is in recess, certain military leaders seized power in the capital by force with the object of setting up a dictatorship under Rashid Ali. who had been compelled some months ago to resign from oflice due to growing dissatisfaction of the Iraki Parliament with his management of affairs. This politician, who is believed to have strong sympathies with totalitarian ideologies, hoped to regain by force a position which he could, not retain with the consent of the lawful representatives of the people of Irak.
