PATRIOTIC APPEAL

FIGURES UR £30,000

MARLBOROUGH'S EFFORT

LATEST RETURNS

An increase for last week of nearly £30,000 in the £I,oo^ooo all purposes patriotic appeal was reported today by Mr. J. Abel, honorary Dominion organiser of the appeal, who stated that the total had now reached £579,000. The outstanding effort of the week, | Mr. Abel said, was the fact that Marlborough had already exceeded its quota of £15,000 by £1000. This was the more commendable when it, was considered that the princess carnival would not conclude until April 26. On this day the Air Force Band 'would visit Blenheim, and the. nine group princesses would assemble for the selection of the queen. This carnival had already produced £11,000 of its total, and Mr." Abel confidently anticipates that Marlborough will greatly exceed its quota before the campaign ends. Another outstanding example of what can be done with concerted effort was reported from Otaki, where pupils and.teachers of the State school had held a gala afternoon in the school grounds and raised £315. Some time had been spent in the organisation of the afternoon, and many kinds of goods suitable for sale Had been contributed. Mr. Abel attended a meeting of the Wanganui patriotic zone last evening, and he stated that it had been decided to conduct a carnival with four queens representing town and country. The campaign would begin about the end of April, and it was anticipated that as a result Wanganui would raise, the £10,000 required to complete its quota. The figures from the various provinces are given by Mr. Abel as follows:—Auckland £147,800, Wellington £107,000, Canterbury £90,000, Otago £70,000, Hawke's Bay £44,500, Taranaki £27,700, Nelson £27,050, East Coast £22,600, Southland £19,400, Marlborough £16,000, Westland £6900. NOTABLE INCREASES. The notable increases last week were: Auckland £12,000, Wellington £9000, Canterbury £6000, Taranaki £6000, and Marlborough £3000. •The Wellington provincial figures are made up of: London appeal, £16,900; Wairarapa, £24,000; Palmerston North, £15,500; Wanganui, £10,000; and Feilding £7500.
