ATTITUDE TO WAR
IRISH CATHOLICS
MR. WILLKIE'S VISIT
LONDON, February 16,
The Lisbon correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says he has learned that Mr. Wendell Willkie visited Ireland at the instigation of Cardinal Hinsley, Catholic Archbishop of Westminster. Mr. Willkie, says the correspondent, told Mr. de Valera that Irish Catholic opinion in the United States does not support Mr. de Valera's attitude to Britain and demands the full co-operation of Eire against Germany without insisting on a united Ireland
as a condition
Mr. de Valera is reported- to have been much impressed, and Mr. Willkie formed the opinion that the Premier might revise his attitude* to Britain and even consider the question of giving her bases. The Rome radio stated that the Portuguese Government has ordered Portuguese to leave Eire because communications between Portugal and Eire will shortly be stopped.
