CONVALESCENT HOMES

WORK FOR SOLDIERS

The Government proposal to establish convalescent homes was discussed at the monthly -meeting of the Great War Funds Administrative Committee. The committee suggested that the homes which had been provided in connection with the last war might be utilised, particularly for "short term" convalescent men, admitted for a few days' treatment. It was decided to refer the matter to headquarters, as other Red Cross homes in the Dominion were involved, with a recommendation that it be taken up by them in the appropriate quarter.

Appreciation was expressed to Mrs. Livingston, Feilding, for a parcel of cigarettes, tobacco, and other gifts for the patients at the Red Cross home during the Christmas season.

The convener of visitors to the hospital (Mrs. King) reported that regular visits had been carried out. Since October 909 visits had been paid to inmates who were ex-servicemen of the, Great War and the present war, and cigarettes and tobacco had been distributed. The visitor to the Ewart and Victoria wards (Mr. W. Anderson) stated that on an average there were 24 ex-servicemen under treatment, and to. those the usual comforts had been given, also the Christmas gift parcel. The mental hospital had been. visited regularly and comforts distributed, and each man there had received a Christmas parcel.

Thanks were expressed to the Red Cross Women's Transport Service for taking official visitors to the hospitals. This service is also arranging picnic outings for the ex-servicemen at Porirua Hospital.

The secretary reported that the cost of distributing gifts to the men in hospitals in the Wellington district for the quarter ended December 31 was £326 18s 2d. Eleven N.Z.E.F. men had presented themselves for assistance in December, and £14 8s 5d was expended.
