HUTT VALLEY CLUB

Mr. W. A. Fisher took first place in bbth tournaments promoted by the Hutt Valley Chess Club last year. He won the club championship, for which there were 20 competitors, with 17 wins and 2 losses, and the annual handicap tourney for the J. W. Wood Cup with 18 wins and 1 loss. Mr. A. Sutherland was runner-up in both tourneys, and the first holder of the handsome trophy donated by Mrs. Wilson, who represented the club in the last tourney for the women's championship of New Zealand. Dr. R. A. Bakewell, the late Mr. G. Wigham, and Mr. W. A. Fisher have each held the club championship twice, and Messrs. J. Ottoway, R. Gilkison, I. Rawnsley, R. S. Kent, and the late E. V. Blazek have each held the title once. As winners of the annual handicap tourney Messrs. S. Jennings and W. A. Fisher have each held the J. W. Wood Cup twice, while Messrs. L. C. King, R. Gilkison, G. L. Giesen, J. W. Wood, and Mrs. Wilson have each held it for one year. Members favour the idea of joining with the Wellington Club in opening the 1941 season with a Wigham Memorial match. COLTS v. VETERANS. The third match between the colts and the veterans ended in favour of the latter by one game, 5h to 4£. Messrs. Fairburn,. McCrea, Otto, and Yarrell scored for the winners, and Messrs. Fletcher, Hammond, and N. S.'Henderson for the losers. The games between Severne and Wade, Kelling and Steele, and Rosenberg and G. H. F. McKenzie, were drawn. The colts won the first match and the second ended in a tie. N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP. The play-off for the New Zealand championship has been tentatively set down for the afternoon of March 1, as Dr. Allerhand is making a good recovery from his illness.
