BLUFF OYSTERS
DISPUTE WITH FISHERMEN
DELAY IN OPENING SEASON
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
INVERCARGILL, February 16.
A dispute which began ;on Friday afternoon between Bluff oystermen and merchants, continues, and ,at present there is no indication of a settlement being reached. The oyster season was to have opened on Saturday, but the trawlers remained in port during the weekend arid will not operate tomorrow.
The dispute arose over the size of sacks. The oystermen asked that sacks be limited to contain 60 dozen oysters. However, the merchants were not prepared to grant the concession and wanted the same sized sacks as have been usd in other years, ordinary wheat sacks. As far as is known, no negotiations are in train, and it is reported that the merchants might be prepared to let the boats remain idle.
Markets throughout New Zealand are affected by the dispute. Had the season opened, on Saturday good catches "would have been secured, as the weather has been ideal.
