"MIRACLE MAN"

SIR HAROLD GILLIES

HELPING AIR-RAID INJURED

{From "The Post's" Representative.)

LONDON, December 20,

Sir Harold Gillies, the New Zealand plastic surgeon, is reported to have effected remarkable .transformations lor civilians who have suffered facial injuries from splintered : glass during air raids. '

"Plastic surgery is one of the branches of medicine in which this country leads the world, and the work of Sir Harold Gillies has earned for him the title of 'miracle man,'" says the "Evening Standard."

"He is a man of many parts, and excels in most. Sir Harold is, among other things, an international golfer, a Cambridge rowing blue, an expert fisherman, a competent painter in oils with a market for his works, and a superb surgical artist.

"In private life Sir Harold has a childlike capacity for fun and games, and the gift of warm, loyal friendship. Though an excellent mixer with all classes, he has more than the accepted Harley Street shyness of publicity.

"Born a New Zealander, he combines the vigour and freshness of a new country with the dignity and poise and tradition that encompass his profession in Britain. The stories; of .his skill are astonishing, but he refuses to discuss, his cases except with his confreres. Associated with him in wartime plastics are many men he has himself trained. His. colleagues includeMr. A. R. Mpwlem (Otago), and Mr. A. Mclndoe (Dunedin)."
