ATTACK BY GERMANS

WEST OF PORTUGAL

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.)

(Received February 14, 12.40 p.m.)

LONDON, February 13

The Berlin radio claimed that German warships attacked a British convoy west of Portugal and sank 13 large armed merchantmen heavily laden with war supplies.

It is admitted in London that German surface ships attacked a convoy in the Atlantic.

A spokesman in Berlin said that this was a large-scale operation in which surface ships, submarines, and aeroplanes took part. The vessels sunk included several big liners. The convoy was completely scattered.
