PEACE AIMS

NEED MUCH THOUGHT

GROWING APPRECIATION

(British Official Wireless.)

* (Received February 13, 1.30 p.m.)

RUGBY, February 12,

Replying to a motion on adjournment by Mr. Mander, dealing with peace aims, Mr. Attlee, Leader of the Labour Party, said: "When you get down to peace aims, as I have done, you will find you have to think a good' deal. I don.'t think it .is a thing that can be done off the reel in a moment. Remember, too, it is one thing for private individuals to put down their peace aims and another thing for a Government to do so."- The Government, he said, had stated 'that a declaration of peace aims would be made at the right time. Such a declaration was a weapon of war, and not quite the same thing as a picture of the post-war world.

"Do not imagine that there is not a very wide and growing agreement in this country, as to the things for which we stand," he continued. "I think there is a growing understanding that we are fighting for a new world, not only for ourselves, but for Europe and the civilised .world. I think there is a growing realisation of a closer linking between our political aims and our economic aims." He regarded this, he said, as one of the most encouraging reasons for ah expression of national unity, gradually spreading towards pe,ace aims, because any statement on this subject must be one making for unity in Britain, the Dominions, and the United States of America, and with all civilised people who were in the present struggle.
