CHILD ENDOWMENT

AUSTRALIAN SCHEME

MELBOURNE, February 11

The Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Fadden) informed a Labour deputation today that the child endowment scheme would operate on July 1 if Parliament passed the necessary legislation in the. forthcoming session. He said the scheme would be financed by contributions from the employers, not the employees. It would apply to all children after the first.

In a joint statement, approved by Mr. Fadden, the members of the deputation said an assurance had been given that the Government was sincere and definite in its desire to introduce the endowment and that the scheme would leave no doubts of its beneficial effects on the family budget.

The present proposal is the payment of 5s a week for each child after the first.
