DISFRANCHISED?
LOWER HUTT DILEMMA
ELECTORAL NO MAN'S LAND
GOVERNMENT MAY
ACT
A curious position has arisen in regard to municipal voters, with a merely residential qualification, who reside in the area now in the Hutt County but which on April 1 will come into Lower Hutt City: that is the area north of the present city boundary as, far as Cemetery Road, and other small areas, which the Commission decided should be included in Lowe 1" Hutt. It would appear that all such voters will be disfranchised as the law states that before such persons can be enrolled as electors they must have resided for three months within the area of the local body upon whose roll they are seeking to be entered. They will enter the city in April, and the municipal elections are in May.
This purely technical difficulty has apparently never been contemplated by the Legislature.
Ratepayer electors are not affected.
The Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) said today that this question had been brought to the attention of the Government, and was receiving consideration.
