GOVERNMENT CARS

WASTAGE ALLEGED

"NOT GOOD EXAMPLE"

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

WANGANUI, This Day.

Allegations of petrol wastage in Government cars were made at a meeting of the Rangitikei County Council. "If the Government wants economy it should start to practise it at home," said Councillor L. Hammond. Government officials and Ministers do not set a good example. They use their cars for everything." Mr. A. W. Sawyer, Oil Fuel Controller at Marton, was invited to the meeting to discuss petrol control generally. This discussion was taken in committee, but in open meeting Mi.. Sawyer said that as far as the general situation permitted, the procedure followed up to now would be continued. There was quite an • erroneous impression abroad that Government vehicles were run at will. Actually, they were subject to close control.

Councillor A. D. Mair expressed concern for the interests of people living many miles from the railway, towns, or suitable transport services. He said fears were held that in the event of further restrictions these people would suffer.
