A NOVICE PROSPECT

ROYAL CHORUS GOOD

CANDIDATE FOR GORE

One of the likeliest improvers seen out during the holidays was the Nigger | Minstrel gelding Royal Chorus, and a bright future is predicted for him. i When making his first appearances with the colours up at the recent Southland Meeting, he w.is responsible for two impressive displays to come from a good way back to secure fourth place each day, and had his run not been delayed it is probable that he would have been returned a winner. He has progressed satisfactorily in the meantime, and he should not be long in opening his winning accoui^t. He is engaged at Gore on Saturday, and as the class £3 by no means strong he should have his opportunity. Royal Chorus is a splendid type of gelding out of the Balboa mare Queen Balboa, a fine performer in the ■ Southland about a decade ago, included among her many successes being the Dunedin Cup in 1929. Daughter of Cricket Bat. j Silver Bat attracted attention by the easy manner in which she won a j double at the recent Wairoa Meeting,! and when the class is of similar grade to that of last week she should continue to pay her way. She is one of the few of the progeny of Cricket Bat to race, being out of the Paladin mare 'Reckless, a half-sister to Tankard, and the dam of two other useful gallopers in Zionist and Iminit. Consistent. The northern mare Kraal is building up a fine record for consistency this season, and it is interesting to note that in her twelve starts to date she has failed on only one occasion to have her number hoisted by the judge. In all she has secured • three firsts, five seconds, one third, and two fourths. She is a three-year-old filly trained at Takanini by E. Pope, and is by Vaals from the Acre mare Marion Acre from Archeno, a daughter of Archiestown and Maheno. Improving Sort. A good opinion is held in the north of the two-year-old Babrow, who created a minor surprise when winning at Thames recently after having been unplaced in his previous two starts. He shows all the attributes of a first-class galloper, and it will be surprising if he does not have a bright future. He is engaged in the Arawa Park Stakes at Rotorua this week, and it is possible that he. will be a prime fancy with backers. Babrow is another of the successful Hunting Song breed from the Lapidary mare Princess Rewa, who came from a branch of the No. 12 family that has not been particularly successful. Out of Hacks. As the result of his success at Riccarton on Saturday Iceland Spar has now worked his way out of the hack ranks, his total earnings being £690, of which he has secured £585 in winning stakes. Throughout his career he has shown strong evidence of developing into a good stayer and a good weight-carrier, which is surprising in view of the fact that he is a lightfleshed gelding and hard to condition. Ajax to be Sold. According to a Press Association message from Melbourne the Australian champion Ajax is to be sold at auction during the progress of the V.R.C. Meeting next month. It is expected that some American breeders will be in the market for the son of Heroic. Carterton Meeting. A varied programme has been arranged for the Carterton Racing Club's Annual Meeting, to be held at Clareville on March 8. Stakes to the value of £650 will be distributed, the feature event being the Wairarapa County Cup Handicap, which has been endowed with £120 and will be run over li I miles.
