The strongest support should be given to the Chamber of Commerce in its effort to, re-establish a direct passenger service between Wellington and Australia. It is both inconvenient and wasteful of time and money that all passengers from the southern end of the North Island and the whole of the South Island should have to travel to Auckland in order to take passage to Australia. The withdrawal of the Maunganui has broken the last direct passenger link and has also left the cargo service dependent wholly on cargo steamers. It cannot be pleaded that the war emergency demands this, or dial ilic concentration of services in Auckland confers a special benefit on the country. On the contrary, the concentration subjects all southern districts to very serious trade handicaps. There are the strongest arguments for remedying the unequal distribution of facilities by diverting al least one of the shipping services to Wellington and by inaugurating alternate Wellington and Auckland calls for the trans-Tasman air service.
