FINE RESPONSE
FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN
The substantial amount of £900 13s lOd was realised by the street day granted to the Wellington Crippled Children Society on Friday last, when collections were organised in Wellington, Lower Hutt, Petone, Eastbourne, and Johnsonville.
In addition to many workers connected with the society, responsibility for the stands was undertaken by the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, Victoria League, Pioneer Club, St. John Ambulance Association, Wellington Branch of the Red Cross, New Zealand Wonien's Institute, members of the Flunket Society, the Jewish Women's Happiness Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Women's Auxiliary of the V.M.C.A., British Sailors' Society, and the Mount Victoria, Kelburn, and Wellington Croquet Clubs. All the helpers entered into the collection with wonderful enthusiasm. The organisation was in the hands of Mrs. May, secretary of the Wellington Crippled Children Society.
Mr. Ernest Hunt, chairman of the executive, expressed his admiration at; the splendid effort put forward in recognition of the work which is being quietly carried out by the society from day to day.
The society ran now undertake further necessary development work which they had feared would have to be postponed till, after the war, he added. They looked forward to the establishment of an orthopaedic hospital as recommended in 1938 by the Royal Commission of Wellington Hospital, and to be in the position to make a substantial grant towards the cost of special equipment for the physical benefit and happiness of crippled children who would be under treatment in such a hospital.
"There is much to do, but the confidence and practical help of the public will enable the society to go forward with the good work which is now firmly established," said Mr. Hunt.
