KEEN SENIOR PLAYa

KILBIRNIE HOLD LEAD

FIRST ROUND OVER

Kilbirnie finished up the first round of the Wellington Cricket Association's senior competition at the top of the championship table with a haii'dy lead of five points, from Midland. These two teams, along with Wellington and Wellington College Old Boys, had wins on^ the first innings in the matches which concluded on Saturday afternoon and which completed the first round of seven series.

Except for the wind, conditions generally were good, but not many batsmen succeeded in taking full advantage of them. There! were, however; several sterling performances, some of them having an important bearing upon results. McCarthy, .with valuable aid from Bilby, saved Institute Old Boys from outright defeat by Midland, who scored well enough to declare with a tidy total, to\ which Osborn and Crawford were outstanding contributors. University, with a4O by Blandford, appeared to have a great opportunity of leading Wellington on the first innings, but Morgan's bowling and a couple of valuable wickets by Symes left University still five runs short when the innings terininated. In subsequent play Wellington' again fell cheaply, and University followed suit, though having some wickets in hand to leave the decision to the first innings.

Hutt also appeared to have a good chance of heading Wellington College Old Boys, but Bird collected Hutt's remaining two wickets cheaply enough to leave Old Boys with eight runs to the good on the first innings. Parkin showed up well with the bat in Old Boys' second innings, after which Hutt played out time, though losing seven wicbkets in the process. Karori had to follow, on against Kilbirnie, but kept the points to the first" innings, Williams putting on a good score in the second innings. SENIOR RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Midland (259 for six wickets, declared) won on the flrst innings from Institute Old Boys (69 and 198 for seven wickets), at the Basin Reserve. Wellington (128 and 133) won on the flrst Innings from University (123 and 64 for six wickets), at the Basin Reserve. Kilbirnie (288) won on the flrst innings from Karori (167 and 136 for eight wickets), at Kilbirnie. Wellington College Old Boys (90 and 201) won- on the first Innings from Hutt (82 and 77 for seven wickets), at Kelburn Park. MAIN PERFORMANCES. > Batting. McCarthy, however, went for runs and scored freely with well-executed strokes. The Institute bowlers were harshly treated by Osborn and Crawford, but found solace later in the day. Bartlett was the only bowler to eeeure two wickets. Fortune and Randell were the most successful Midland bowlers.

.Although' Wellington's scoring was moderate in both innings, it: was still Aye rups too large in the first innings for University, who replied to Wellington's 12S with 123. bB. T. Morgan's excellent bag of sis wlclcets for 45 was the main reason for the miss; with three wickets down for 79 University crept tq the nineties and then lost five wickets for two runs—four fo? 93, five for 93, six for 95, seven for 95, eight for 95. In his thirteenth over (he bowled seventeen altogether) Morgan took three wickets for no runs. Blandford headed University's scoring with a sound 40, 24 'of them in boundaries. Meech, with 39, was the principal contributor to Wellington's 133 in the second • innings, and at stumps University had scored 64 for six wickets. On an excellent pitch and in the best of weather, Karori gave a . disappointing display of batting against Kilbirnie, for whom Wilson bowled very effectively. When the eighth, wicket fell only 108 had been scored, but a stand of 57 by Heenan and Nimmo gave the final total a more respectable appearance. In the follow-on the showing was no better than in the flrst Innings, though Heenan and Williams batted briskly. Scoring was low in the senior match at Kelburn Park, where. Hutt managed to hold Wellington College. Old Boys to a win on the flrst Innings. The game was interesting from the Start. Bird quickly took the last two wickets while Hiitt were still in arrears and brought his bag to five wlclcets. Champness was soon collecting Old Boys wickets in their second innings and Hutt had a great opportunity of turning the tables when the sixth wicket fell at 95. Parker, however, came to light with a splendid effort which placed his side In a safe position. Some eighty minutes of play remained, and the interest Increased as the Hutt wickets once again fell cheaply. Bird was bowling with great dash, but there was tiot enough time to complete the Hutt collapse.
