ATTACKS ON SHIPPING

MAIM ENEMY OBJECTIVE

MENACE CAN BE MET

LONDON, January 17,

Mr. Ronald Cross, Minister of Shipping, spoke today about our shipping losses. He said that they had been serious in spite of the welcome decrease in recent weeks and we could not assume that the future would be easy. We had to face the fact that our shipping would continue to be one of the main points of attack.

H.e pointed out that the Germans, by possessing ports on the Atlantic, had an advantage this time that they did not have in the last war, but we had something to weigh against that. "We know how to cope with submarines today," he said, "and, given the equipment, destroyers, and aircraft, we can subdue that menace."
