ASSAULT ON THREE TOWNS
WAVES FOR HOURS

LONDON, January 17,
Raiders rained incendiaries on three West of England towns last night. A number of fires were started and-some were serious. Commercial and other buildings were damaged, but the casualties were not large. There were two alerts in London, but * the raiders changed their course in the i face of a severe barrage before reach- ] ing the city. ] Sweeping over the city in waves for hours, German bombers scattered firebombs and explosives on Bristol* the t main objective of the raiders last ( tjight. Bombs struck a hospital, damag- . ing the administrative block, but there were no casualties among the patients. 5 Many houses were destroyed or damaged, and people were trapped under wreckage. A single enemy aircraft dropped a bomb in East Kent this morning but no damage or casualties resulted.
