POSTHUMOUS AWARD
TARANAKI AIRMAN
FIGHTING OVER AFRICA
(Received January 18. noon.)
LONDON, January 17,
A posthumous award of the D.F.C. has been mad* to Flying Officer H. M. F. Barnitt, of New Plymouth, who was killed in an air accident in October.
The citation states that since June he had completed over 100 hours with fighter patrols on convoy work and in covering the evacuation from Berbera. He also made two highly successful reconnaissances over enemy aerodromes in Abyssinia.
On one occasion he pursued a formation of five planes back to enemy territory. He always pressed home his attacks with courage and determination. One day in October he attacked three enemy planes which were bombing a convoy over which he was on patrol in the Gulf of Aden. One enemy plane was so damaged that it later crashed into the sea. He twice attacked another plane, but was forced to break off the engagement when his port engine was hit.
