EMERGENCY WORK

THREE FIRE ALARMS

Three alarms of fire were given almost simultaneously in different parts of Petone last night. There were no actual fires, and yet the calls were not false alarms. They were given to test the efficiency of the town's firefighting organisation under the emergency precautions scheme, and the way everything was carried out earned the commendation of Mr. J. P. Gaynor, superintendent of the Petone Fire Brigade.

The first call was to a hotel in Jackson Street, and onlookers were treated to a spectacular demonstration. One engine turned out, and four deliveries of water were brought into action from main and side streets. Meantime, calls were received from premises in Nelson Street, and at the corner ot Cuba and Jackson Streets. One delivery was brought into play in each case. The fire-fighters were taken to the scene of the third "outbreak" in a private car.
