A POPULAR STAR

Paul yon Hernried, an acknowledged star on" the Continent, has soon established himself as a leading player in Britain. He was warmly praised by both critics and public for his portrayal of Max Staefel, the idealistic German master in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's "Good-bye, Mr. Chips." Born in Vienna, Paul yon Hernried was educated there at the Theresianische Academy. As a youth he wanted to be an actor. His father was a prominent Austrian banker. At the Vienna Conservatorium yon Hernried studied every branch of the dramatic art and appeared in a leading part in a play put on by the organisation. Max Reinhardt, the celebrated impresario, saw Paul's performance in this piece and singled him out for the lead in a professional play. Almost overnight he became a star. Continental films claimed him, and he was achieving notable success in this sphere when Gilbert Miller saw him acting in Vienna and brought him to London. He is now naturalised.
