MR. E. J. HILL
!... VISIT TO WELLINGTON
; Mr. E. J. Hill, formerly of Wellington, but for the last three years resident in Auckland, is.visiting Wellington, and will be here for about a month. A life ■member of both the Wellington and Hutt Bowling Clubs, Mr. Hill is now one of the skips of the Carlton Club, Auckland. "Bowling is a religion in Auckland," he remarked to a "Post" representative today, adding that even in wintertime play was possible and was enjoyed by a large number of players. Last winter there had been ninety playing days. In Auckland, Mr. Hill said!'every man had an opportunity of playing in the pennant competition.
Normally the Carlton Club played thirty-six rinks in the pennants, and teams often- travelled as far as forty miles to fulfil their engagements. Auckland bowlers were great enthusiasts. Mr. Hill said that Auckland bowling ! greens now largely used Mercury Bay I weed, the result being that the surfaces were so well covered that bare patches were seldom, if ever, seen. This weed was first employed by the Hillsboro' Club.' Auckland soil was, of course, very suitable for bowling greens, and a green laid down in Ac autumn would be available for play the following summer. Mr. Hill added that scrim was used a good deal on the Auckland, greens, and this helped to preserve the ends.
