'By Teleeraph—Press Association.'
ir'rt.l^iVlJlinOi.wiN in., J.IUS uay. Ten thousand pinus insignis trees, 17 years old, were destroyed by a fire which cut a two-mile swathe through the _dry grass and low growths in the. Oroua Downs district, just inside the coastal belt, north of Foxton yesterday afternoon and night. The owner of the trees, Mr. Gibbs, a nurseryman, of Dannevirke, estimates his loss at £5000. Practically all the men in the district were engaged yesterday in fighting the fire. It is believed to have started on a roadside, on the seaward .side of. the main highway, which runs parallel to the coast, and at about 10 o'clock in the morning established a hold in lupins and. fern near the schoolhouse, which was narrowly saved. The fire was thought to be out by the middle of the afternoon, but suddenly blazed up and crossed the highway.. Aided by howling winds, it soon reached a plantation of 100 acres. Another plantation beyond was saved. The wind is still strong today, and there is no sign of rain.
