AUSTRALIAN RACING

PEERLESS'S LOSS OF FORM

(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, January 2. Caesar, winner of the Carrington Stakes on New Year's Day, is one of the few tubed horses racing in Australia, and he has won three races since having the extra air apparatus. As a two-year-old he was top class and defeated Ajax on two occasions, but now he requires conditions'in his favour, and has only a short, sharp run. He was able to utilise this in the Carrington Stakes and just scored from the hardy old Red Thespian. The Carrington Stakes field was weakened considerably by the scratchings of. Ensign and Trimmer, both of whom had. been in the wars. Ensign had been hit in the eye and almost blinded in the Chisholm Handicap, and for a day or so it was feared that the sight of his brilliant three-year-old had been affected.. However, all is well with him again, and he will be racing again in the autumn. Trimmer, a topclass five-year-old sprinter, just coming to his best form, struck himself on th eve of the race. An unusual incident prior to Tattersall's Cup on New Year's Day was due to a misunderstanding surrounding the scratching of Dollar. Finally. Dollar was put back in the field, and a redraw was made of the barrier positions. This reacted unfavourably in some cases, particularly in the case of Malagigi, who from No. 1 in the first draw went out to No. 14. While Malagigi might not have won with 9st lib, including his 101b penalty, his chances were not improved, and he finished only fifth. The best New Zealand performer in the race was Yours Truly, who finished a creditable second and does not seem to be able to improve on minor placings. Peerless was a starter, but ran poorly. She seems to have lost all form and appears disinclined to do her best in races-.
