(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 13. Two rounds in the fours at the NewZealand bowling championships were played today. Though all the greens were slightly heavy for the first half of the morning, following Sunday's storm, they had dried out by lunch time, and were running freely in the afternoon. The day started off with the usual thrills, the first being- the defeat of the crack Auckland rink, R. V. Warman, R. Campbell, G. A. Deare, and W.Bremner, by J. Currie, J. D. Best, and D. Stevenson, skipped by the Taieri veteran, W. Carswell, the final, score being 24-20. Carswell took his second game 30-10 against T. Poole (Amberley). C. Spearman (R.S.A., Christchurch) started well by taking his first two games. He beat J. Scott (Sydenham), 24-19, and J. N. Stephenson (Nelson), 32-19. J. Veitch (Dunedin) opened well by defeating A. S. Mclnnes (Temuka), 27-17, but went down 24-19 to A; S. Watkins (Christchurch) in the afternoon. W. D. Ramsay (Shirley), who won all. his eight section games last year in Wellington, went down 29-18 to A. Bell (Tauranga) in the morning game; but won his second against J. Conder (Lyall Bay), 25-19. On the. Elmwood .green A. E. H. Christie (Cashmere) beat C. Madsen (Opawa), 28-25, in the morning game but went down 24-23 to J. R. Smith .(Kelburn) in the afternoon. A Hokitika four skipped by J. S. Bain beat E. C. La Frantz (Maitai). 25-18, in the morning, and T. Satterthwaite (Spreydon) 23-20 in the afternoon. • On the United No. 1 green another West Coast team skipped by E. R. Moss (Karoro) won both its games, defeating S. J. Snedden (Linwood) in the morning and T. Hubbard (Caversham) in the afternoon. LIVINGSTONE LOSES A GAME. The second high light of the day came when F. Livingstone (Onehunga) lost one of his lives. In the morning game he won from A. J. Green (West* port), 28-23, but A. G. Spiers (St. Kilda) ran out ahead 23-22 in the afternoon game. R. S. Higginbotham (Ponsonby) lost his morning game to T. F. Chambers (Sumner), 23-13, but won 32-8 against J. Holgate (Mornington) in the afternoon. D. H. Thomson (Phoenix, Oamaru) beat the hard-driving West Coaster L, G. Mercer. 24-18, in the morning, but could not hold A. S. McDougall (Caversharn) in the afternoon, going down 32-16. The hard-fighting Dunedin skip T. Ferguson (Balmacewen) made things hard for his opponents. In the morn- I ing he defeated W. J. Caldwell (Maheno), 26-17, and later put down T. H. Watts (Beckenham), 33-14. A. Besley (Sydenham), one of the hardest-driving skips in Christchurch, scored twice. He beat Watts (Beckenham), 25-14, and Caldwell (Maheno), 28-11. C. Taylor (Sydenham), who has just celebrated his eightieth birthday and who was well up in the post section games of the singles^ started off well by beating J. Dv Feu (St. Albans), 26-21, and S. Larking (Beckenham), 24-18. ELMWOOD TWICE BEATEN. Though backed by a" strong team, J. R. Smith (Elmwood) failed to win either of his first two games. In the morning he was beaten by H. P. Perry (Thorndon), 21-19, and in the afternoon by P. H. Rowe (Ponsonby), 32-17. H. . S. Maslin (Hawera), who had M. J. Squire at third, beat S. C. K. Smith (North End, Invercargill), 32----14, and J. Chatfield (Edgeware), 27-17. J. Dowlarid (St. Kilda), who formerly played third for G. Claridge (Dunedin), has his own team this year, and scored a 34-25 win over J. Bary (Blenheim) and 31-18 over W. Brown (United). J. Turpin, a former well-known Christchurch footballer, has come out with his own team this year and started off well by scoring two wins; In the first game he beat A. W. Cullen (Thorndon). 33-10, and in the second G. Williams (Edgeware), 32-14. Turpin was second in.R. Haworth's team which won the fours . championship in 1936 and he. led for the same skip when they.won the pairs the same year. P. Munn (Canterbury), who has a strong team, won both his games. He beat A. W. St. John (Nelson) in the morning, 27-17, and J. Caulter (North East Valley), 20-17, in the afternoon game. * The Martin brothers, skipped by J. S. Martin (Auckland), who have entered from the United Club, went down 21-20 to P. W. Smith (Thorndon), but scored a 28-18 win over J. B Hawkey (Timaru). A game watched with interest was that between R. Haworth (Canterbury) and J. D. Marks (Christchurch). It proved no contest, however, as the former ran out an easy winner, 29-11, this being his second win for the day. The Dunedin skip K. Morrison notched two wins. He beat E. C. Scales .(Ashbury), 26-22, and R. Burgess (Woolston), 26-18. R. E. McNish (Canterbury), another of the early choices to be among the finalists, scored two wins, the . first against T. G. Fox (Christchurch), 29-12, and the other against M. J. Casey (Thorndon), 27-18. The first eight scored was got by W. J. Crawford (Otago), playing against L. Goldfinch (Wellington), but despite this handicap the. Wellington skip tied on the last head and eventually won the game. .
