LOSS BY VICHY
SUBMARINE & TANKER
APPARENTLY TORPEDOED
LONDON, January 3,
The Vichy authorities have announced the loss of a submarine and an oil tanker off the African coast. The incident occurred a fortnight ago.
The communique issued by the Vichy authorities says that the submarine Sfax and the fleet tanker Rhone were proceeding together from a port in Morocco to Dakar when they sank on the afternoon of December 19 after heavy explosions.
The communique adds that they were apparently torpedoed by a submarine whose nationality was unknown. Sixtyfour men from the submarine, whose normal complement was 67, were lost, and 10 men on the tanker lost their lives.
The British Admiralty states that no British submarine was within 500 miles of the scene of the incident on the date in question.
