200 SHIPS
TO BE BUILT IN U.S.A.

WASHINGTON, January 3.
The President has announced that steps are being taken to start building in the United States about 200 merchant ships of 7500 tons. They will cost about £75,000,000 or £88,000,000 and some of them ought to be ready for use within a year. About £9,000,000 has already been allotted to the Maritime Commission to start the construction of shipyards for the building pro; gramme. Both ships and shipyards will be owned by the Government.
At the same time the United States naval officials in New York announced that the keel of a new 45,000-ton battleship, the Missouri, would be laid at the Brooklyn naval yards on Monday. She will be completed in 194?
German companies now tied up in American ports. The Administration is studying the legal aspects involved in possible acquisition of the ships.
President Roosevelt held a conference with the Secretary of War, Mr. Stimson, when it is believed they discussed the proposal for the leasing of merchant ships and also the speeding up of the dispatch of planes to Britain. It is reported from Chicago that Mr. W. A. White, chairman of the Committee to Defend America By Aiding the Allies, which has had a big effect on public opinion, has resigned on the ground that the job is too big for him. •
