FIRST "AT HOME"
WOMEN'S TRAINING CAMP
NATIONAL SERVICE CORPS
A unique function took place at the Avondale training camp on New Year's Day, when Miss D. M. Hawkins, chief commandant,. the officers and volunteers of the Women's National Service Corps, held their first "At Home." The occasion provided the 150 occupants of the camp with an opportunity for entertaining their friends,' and giving them some idea of the routine followed in the camp's administration.
Visitors were keenly 'interested in all the working' details; from the individual tents with their meticulously folded bedding to the popular cookhouse, where generous, meals are provided, while the recreational facilities are also kept in mind. Guests found special' interest in watching the changing of the guard, a ceremonial which was marked with traditional solemnity.
An inspection of the camp features, expeditiously aided by members of the corps, was followed by afternoon tea, which was served in the respective messes of the officers, sergeants, and volunteers.
During the morning the Hon. P. C. Webb paid an informal visit of inspection to the camp, and saw the signalling class in action. A demonstration of physical drill was also given, and a rousing camp song gave a jolly community touch.
