SPANISH SHIPS
SUNK BY AXIS ACTION
"SYSTEMATIC CAMPAIGN"
LONDON, January 2
Information which has reached London discloses that at least six Spanish merchant ships or fishing vessels have been attacked and sunk by Italian or German submarines in recent months, and there appears to be a systematic Axis campaign to sink Spanish ships None of the ships sunk were engaged in a trade which could remotely benefit the Allied cause.
One of them,.a-vessel of 4000 tons, was carrying food to Spain from Yugoslavia when it was-sunk off Sardinia last September. It had previously made a trip to Italy. Another 4000-ton vessel was sunk the same month while carrying food to Spain from South America.
These ships belonged, to. a Spanish line which was specifically mentioned in instructions given to Italian suomarine commanders as objectives for attack. The comment on these surprising incidents in London is that Spain has reason to be grateful for British naval supremacy in the Mediterranean which prevents Italian surface ships-from finding the same sort of objective."
