This archipelago is a large number of islands lying north and north-east of New Guinea and which, prior to 1918, were held by Germany. The largest island in the group is New Pomerania, but the archipelago also includes Neiv Mecklenburg, New Hanover, small attendant islands, the Admiralty Islands, and a chain off the coast of New Guinea, the whole system lying in the form of a great amphitheatre of oval shape.
