GREEKS & ITALIANS

BATTLE FOJI VILLAGE ON LAKE

INTENSE COLD

ENEMY PREPARING NEW LINE

LONDON, January 1.

The latest news from Albania is given in a Reuter dispatch describing the fighting on the central front. It says that fierce encounters are still going on along the shore of Lake Ochrida and the Greeks are concentrating on the capture of the village of Lin. Neither side at present holds the village. Greek advanced elements entered it a day or two ago but later were withdrawn.

Progress is difficult because of the intense" cold and deep snow. Moreover, the Italians are still holding some important high positions, but they do not seem to be confident about retaining them and much of their equipment is being withdrawn towards Elbasan.

A Reuter report from Athens tells of a.new line of fortified positions being prepared by the Italians across central Albania, which begins to the north of Valona, runs east to Elbasan, and then northwards towards the Yugoslav frontier. . The preparation of this line is interpreted as indicating that the Italian hopes of continuing their resistance to the Greek advance in their present positions are diminishing.
