ROWING

PICTON REGATTA

STAR HAS A GOOD DAY

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

PICTON, This Day.

Wellington crews once again gave their support to the annual New Tear's Day Regatta at Picton yesterday. They did not go unrewarded, the Star Club, in particular, being prominently placed. The club gained the maiden fours, the maiden double sculls, and the junior pairs and collected.second money in the youths' fours and the junior fours. Petone spent an unremunerative day, but the Wellington Club won the welterweight junior fours and finished second in the maiden pairs and the maiden double sculls. The crew gave a stirring performance in the latter event; picking up almost seven lengths on Star after a bad start. Picton had their only win in the junior fours. Their rowing was always a shade stronger than Starts,. who. forced them along over the full distance only, to fade away with the line in. sight. Picton steered accurately and at ■no stage did their' combination weaken. This could not be said: either of Star or Wairau, who veered off the course more than once. Petone, of, whom ■ more was expected, could not compete with the pace set by the winners. Neither could Arapawa: ■

The biggest thrill of the day was reserved for the last race, the maiden double sculls.. Star won the event, but the credit .went to i Wellington, who, in finishing second; were responsible, for a sensational performance., Just, after the start the Wellington stroke jumped the seat runner and the boat came to a standstill. After speedy repairs, the crew started again in spite of the fact that it was a. good seven lengths behind. After half a mile it v had collected Wairau and Petone. Showing unusual stamina, the crew kept hard at it and in a thrilling dash for the line' got to within three-quarters of a length of Star. Wellington received an ovation for what officials, described as the greatest display in their experience. : .'
