CHIEF CLERK RETIRES

Mr. S. Gambrill,, Chief Clerk in the head office of the Lands and Survey Department, one of the best-known civil servants in Wellington, retired on superannuation at. the end of 1940. Mr. Gambrill's term of office has b,een unusual as the whole of his 40 years' service was spent in the one office.' On the day of his retirement he was met. by his fellow, officers. The Under-Secretary, Mr. R.-.G. Macmorran, paid tribute to Mr. Gambrill's outstanding ability as an officer and to his obliging and genial personality, and on behalf of the staff presented the guest with a reading lamp and stand, a clock, a case of pipes, a wristlet watch, and a case of golf balls. Other officers who have been associated with Mr. Gambrill supported Mr. Macmorran's remarks.
