PROVINCES AT PLAY

CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON

RUNS PLENTIFUL

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

CHRISTCHURCH. This Day.

Most of the Wellington side's play on the first day of the representative cricket, match with Canterbury at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, yesterday, was in the field. Some strong batting under excellent conditions kept the visitors busy. Some chances were lost In the field, but they were not easy.

In Canterbury's innings the principals were .Uttley, Anderson, and Roberts, whose contributions made up the greater part of the home side's score of 359. Uttley, ouo of the openers, played a sound innings ior his 78, though he was in for nearly three houm. He did much to break the back of ti)3 bowling for later batsmen. That applied also to Anderson. The partnership between the batsmen was worth 134. Roberts again came to the rescue of his side, and was unlucky in not reaching ji contury.

Pritchard was the peck of the seven Wellington bowlers used. He developed a good deal of pace at times, and some of' the balls he sent down, short ones specially, came up very sharply, and few batsmen were really at home to him. H ewas unlucky in having three catches dropped off him, and, though his figures of .five for 87 off 22 overs were good, he deserved better ones. The promising slow bowler, G. O. Rabone, kept an excellent length right from the start, and no one could take liberties with him. His figures of three for 74 off 15 overs represented good bowling. Ashenden, Wilson, and Lamason all bowled steadily, with Ashenden the most impressive.

The Wellington fielding was good, and the chances missed were difficult ones. Norris, behind the wickets, gave a fine exhibition. In the remaining hour for play Wellington made a confident start. Donnelly, who has made 41 not out, made his runs in his usual effortless style. Details :— CANTERBURY. First Innings.
