MUSIC AND NEWS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I hearily agree with Lewis Daly on one thing, namely, that the heading "Bedtime Music" is definitely wrong. The majority of letters published condemn jazz music in a most amusing and childish manner. I suggest that letters in this discussion be published under a heading, "Chance for Jazz Haters to Complain." ! The argument used by Mr. Daly is! illogical, there being no necessity to j tune into a station before 11 p.m., as the Daventry broadcast is never early but comes over the air exactly at 11 p.m. Regarding the suggested serious approach to the Daventry news. Admittedly, the present situation is very serious, but who desires classical music, which generally creates long faces, prior to the broadcasts? The British still smile and crack jokes through the bombing of their cities, though, they naturally feel it very badly. If they refuse to wear their hearts upon their sleeves why should not we do the same? Bright music is essential prior to the Daventry news,! for obvious reasons, and may I com-| mend the controller of programmes for j his broadmindedness.—l am, etc., NOT NARROWMINDED.
