THE CROWNING CEREMONY

The queen carnival organised by the Miramar Patriotic Committee realised the splendid sum of £987 10s, to go to the Million Pound Patriotic Appeal Fund. The chairman of the committee, the Rev. Archdeacon Jermyn, announced at the crowning ceremony at the Town Hall last night that it was expected the sum would be a "round £1000" when it was handed over to the Metropolitan Committee before Christmas. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and Mrs. Hislop attended the ceremony, and saw the successful candidate,- Miss Marjorie Stone, the Navy queen, crowned amid a pageant of pomp and colour. The winning queen wore white, the Army queen, Miss Peggy Booth, wore red and white, and the Air Force queen, Miss Thelma Wilson (who took the place of Miss Ivy Duffin), was dressed in blue. Their attendants, Mrs. Gardner, and the Misses Ngaire Marshall, Betty Thomson, Joan Williams, Ivy McGregor, and Claire Nicolson. were dressed in colours corresponding to their queens. The Miramar Boys' Brigade led the parade, and triumphal organ, music was played by Mrs. G. Aldridge. The "Lord Chamberlain" who crowned the queen was Mr. G. H. Roberts, and the "Lord Chancellor" was Mr. W. Hawker. Miss Gwen Luff was mistress of robes, and there were several page boys and other picturesquely-robed attendants, Mr. Hislop, when congratulating the people of Miramar on their fine effort, said their example would be. an en- j couragement to the people in.all the other suburbs of Wellington. The executive committee comprised the Rev. Archdeacon Jermyn, chairman; Mr. G. H. Roberts, secretary; Mrs. F. M. Thompson, treasurer; Mr. and Mrs. P. J. McCarthy, and Messrs. Williams, T. K. Moody, Bull, and Ross. Before the crowning ceremony, a bright concert programme was presented by local artists.
