PORT BRISBANE SUNK

LONDON, November 27.

The British cargo ship Port Brisbane (8739 tons) was sunk by an enemy raider in the Indian Ocean five days ago. It was stated by the Australian Navy Minister (Mr. Hughes) that an Australian warship had arrived at an Australian port with 27 survivors on board.

Mr. Hughes announced in the Federal House of Representatives some days ago that an Australian cruiser had been detailed for action off the coast of Western1 Australia, where an enemy raider was alleged to have appeared. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. J. Curtin) had asked Mr. Hughes if he was in a position to make a statement on reports that a raider was. ravaging merchant. shipping off Fremantle, and what steps had been taken in connection with the reports. Mr. Hughes said that he was not in a position to make any further statement.
