ITALIANS RUN AGAIN

Main Battle Fleet

PURSUED BY BRITISH

Fired On At Extreme Range

LONDON, November 27.

The Admiralty announced today that the main Italian battle fleet—so far as it exists—has once more run away on sighting British warships.

An official communique states that information has been received that British naval forces in the Mediterranean made contact shortly before noon today with an Italian force which was reported to consist of two battleships and a large number of cruisers and destroyers. Immediately on becoming aware of the approach of the British forces the enemy altered course and retired at high speed towards their base. The British forces pursued, and it is known that they engaged the enemy at extreme range. No further information is at present available, but the communique states that full details will be announced as soon as possible.

Since the successful attack at Taranto, Italy has had only three serviceable battleships, so it was practically the entire Italian battle fleet that was encountered, or nearly encountered, in the Mediterranean. It appears that this battle fleet, after its brief reappearance, has again gone to port without doing battle.
