LIME WORKERS' AWARD

APPEALS FROM DECISIONS

Appeals by the unions against, the decisions of its' -delegate, -Mr.; J. A. Gilmour, S.M., any the ;Wellington Industrial District Lime Workers' Award, 1937, and 4he Northern, Taranaki. Wellington,; Marlborough, Nelson, Westland, and Canterbury Lime Workers' Award, On questions submitted, were heard by the Court of Arbitration today. • " ■■'

The first appeal was against the decision (except in the case of one company) that overtime' was not payable for work ,'done before -7.30 a.m. and after 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and before 7,30 a.m. on Saturdays. Hours of work varied, and the question whether the award conferred the authority for the working of. shifts without overtime entered. Mr. Gilmour had decided that it did, with; one,exception, the parties evidently having in contemplation the working of shifts outside the clock hours.

The second appeal was from Mr. Gilmour's decision that it was possible for an employer to work employees two periods in a ■ day, the first starting at 8 a.m. and finishing at 4 p.m., and the second starting at 8 p.m. and finishing at 4 a.m., ' ,

Mr. P. M. Butler appeared for the

unions, and Mr. W. J. Mountjoy for the employers, in both cases. After hearing the advocates, the Court reserved its decision.
