TANGIER NEUTRALITY

WATCH BY BRITAIN

EXCHANGE OF VIEWS BY MADRID

LONDON, November 27.

The position of Tangier was the subject of questions in the House of Commons this afternoon.

Mr. Butler, Under-Secretary of Foreign Affairs, said that the importance of the neutrality of the Tangier zone had recently been brought to the notice of the Spanish Government. He said there had been an interchange of views between the British Ambassador in Madrid and the Spanish Foreign Minister, Senor Suner. The British Government was watching, the situation very closely for the purpose of safeguarding its interests under the neutrality treaties in force. .

Mr; Butler was then asked about Italian submarines in the port of. Tangier. He said that the Government's information was that the usual practice of international law was being followed. . The submarines .had been damaged, and the Foreign Office understood that they were being made seaworthy at the earliest possible moment. The practice of international law was that they might remain in a neutral port for 24 hours after being made seaworthy.
