LOWER HUTT BRANCH.
I The chairmen of the five area committees of the Lower Hutt branch of the Home Guard and the conveners of the various organisations: bi / the Lower Hutt Emergency Precautions Committee held a combined Vneeting under the chairmanship of the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews) at Lower Hutt on Saturday to discuss plans for a drive in recruiting for the Home Guard. . . The Mayor explained that, the great hindrance to recruiting had now. been removed by the statement of. the Minister of Man-power that adequate compensation would be paid to.members in case of proved injury in the course of Home 'Guard duties. It had '.also been made clear that there would be a definite worth-while job for every one who joined up, and the Defence Department had intimated that enrolment was an immediate necessity. A new and simplified enrolment form was now available and it was desired that all who had signed .the old form should sign the new form and cancel the old one, which had contained the objectionable clause. by which members contracted themselves out of a claim for compensation. It was decided to supply members of the committee with a circular letter setting out the importance of the Home Guard and some of the duties that the two branches—civil and military—would be called upon to perform. . .
